Grain Waves Sampling Trolleys

Sunbites Grain Waves is a brand that sits under the Smith’s Snackfood group, and was introduced to Aussie shores in 2010.  They've quickly become Australia’s favourite wholegrain chip!

The Challenge

We were approached by Test Drive, a subsidiary of Channel 5 Communications and one of Australia’s leading shopper marketing agencies, to create a sampling trolley that would resemble the Grain Waves retail pack. 

The brief came with a few key points that had to be addressed:

  • It had to be easily manoeuvred.
  • It had to be able to hold a good level of stock to avoid constant replenishing
  • It had to fit into the back of a small car and be simple to set up and pack away
  • It had to be durable and have longevity to deliver a good ROI

The Solution

As with all our briefs, we got our heads together and came up with a plan that would work. Creating a sampling trolley that was made to look like a Grain Waves chip packet – simple, right?

Yes and no; the practicality of making a round sampling bin look like a chip packet comes with its challenges. How would it stand up? How would we get the squareness of a chip packet whilst still having enough room to hold stock?  How would we move the trolley around?

The solution was to design a clever oval shape, with the graphic stitched into “tips” so as to resemble the corners of a packet.  The oval shape enabled the unit to stand on its own and retain its stability, whilst the wheels gave it easy manoeuvrability. We created some textured artwork for the inside of the trolley, which helped it to resemble the crinkled silver inside a chip packet.

Our design disassembled quickly and easily into six component pieces, and could be packed away into a single carry bag.  Assembly took only two minutes, with no tools required.

The units were used extensively for sampling around the country, and the client was delighted. Not only was the campaign a great success, they now have a sampling trolley they can easily re-brand for use in future campaigns as they are simple to re-skin for a different promotion or product. This means their initial investment can give them plenty of long term value via repeated use over the next few years.
