Can you take a pull-up banner on a plane?

Can I take a pull-up banner as carry-on?

Usually not. The banner rolls into a base that runs the full width of the graphic, and Australia's main domestic airlines cap a carry-on bag at 56 x 36 x 23cm (Qantas, Virgin Australia, and Jetstar for travel before 2 February 2027, when its carry-on rules change). A standard 850mm wide Premier packs into a bag 90cm long, far longer than 56cm, so plan to check it in.

Can I check it in?

Yes, in most cases. Our pull-up banners come in a carry bag, and they're light: the Premier weighs less than 6kg and packs into a padded, reinforced carry bag with a shoulder strap. Weight is rarely the problem. Length is, because every airline also limits the size of a checked piece or treats long items as oversized.

Airline rules change, so always check your own booking. These are the rules on each airline's own baggage pages.

Use the following steps to fly with a pull-up banner

1. Measure and weigh the packed bag. Zip the stand into its carry bag, then measure the length, width and height, and add them together. Weigh it on bathroom or luggage scales.

Every Premier carry bag is 10cm high and 23cm deep. Its length is the banner width plus 5cm:

- Premier 500mm: 55 x 23 x 10cm, adds up to 88cm - Premier 850mm: 90 x 23 x 10cm, adds up to 123cm - Premier 1000mm: 105 x 23 x 10cm, adds up to 138cm - Premier 1200mm: 125 x 23 x 10cm, adds up to 158cm

So the 500, 850 and 1000mm bags fit the 140cm total that Qantas, Virgin Australia and Rex use, and the 1200mm bag goes over it. On Jetstar, the 1000 and 1200mm bags are longer than one metre, so they count as oversized.

2. Check your numbers against your airline:

  • Qantas: Economy on Australian domestic flights includes 1 checked piece up to 23kg, and the total dimensions of each piece can't be more than 140cm. No single piece can exceed 32kg. On Dash 8 flights, only one piece up to 23kg can be taken.
  • Virgin Australia: bags must fit within a total linear dimension of 140cm, and no single item can weigh more than 32kg. Oversized baggage can be checked in up to 32kg, and the maximum length on its domestic B737, A320 and F100 aircraft is 3.0 metres. Choice and Flex fares include 1 x 23kg. Lite fares include no checked baggage.
  • Jetstar: any bag or item with a single side longer than one metre counts as oversized, and an oversized item handling fee may apply. The maximum length on its domestic A320, A321 and Boeing 787 flights is 2.3m, and no single item can weigh more than 32kg.
  • Rex: the oversize charge is $16.50 (incl. GST) per piece if h + w + d is more than 140cm, plus excess baggage charges if the item takes you over your allowance. The maximum length of an oversized item is 2 metres. Checked baggage on its SAAB 340 services is 15kg on Community, Promo and Saver fares, and 23kg on Flex.

IMPORTANT: None of the four airlines accepts a single piece over 32kg as baggage. Virgin Australia, Jetstar and Rex all say heavier items go as freight.

3. Add the bag to your booking. If your fare has no checked baggage, or the banner is a second bag, buy extra baggage when you book. Qantas and Rex both say buying it before you fly costs less than paying excess baggage at the airport.

4. Ring ahead for a long or extra-wide bag. Our extra-wide pull-up banners run from 1.5m to 3.2m wide, so their bags are well past Jetstar's one-metre oversize line, and the widest may be longer than an airline's maximum length (2m on Rex, 2.3m on Jetstar, 3.0m on Virgin Australia). Qantas limits each domestic checked bag to 140cm in total and publishes no oversize length, so ask Qantas before you book. Virgin Australia suggests guests with oversized baggage call its Guest Contact Centre on 13 67 89 before arriving at the airport.

5. Carry it to the bag drop by its handles or shoulder strap, and keep your carry-on for the things you can't replace at the venue, such as a laptop.

6. Finally, check the stand when you land. Open the bag, look over the base and pole sections, and set it up once before the show opens. You're done!

Note: Flying with a Sky Banner? Its carry bag fits as check-in luggage on a plane and weighs around 12kg, depending on size. For a whole stand, our logistics and storage team can get your kit delivered across the country instead.
