What size are DL, A4 and A5 brochures, and what holder do they fit?

What are the standard brochure and flyer sizes?

Brochures and flyers in Australia use the international A series of paper sizes (ISO 216), plus DL, which is one third of an A4 sheet (99 x 210mm). Each A size is half the one above it, so an A4 sheet folded in half is A5, and folded in half again is A6.

SizeFlat size (mm)How it relates to A4Typical use

A6105 x 148A4 folded twice (in half, then in half again)Postcards
DL99 x 210One third of A4 (A4 folded in thirds)Tri-fold brochures, short notes

Sizes are flat (trimmed) sizes. If you're mailing brochures as well as displaying them, the envelope sizes follow the same system:

  • C4 (229 x 324mm) takes an A4 sheet flat.
  • C5 (162 x 229mm) takes an A4 sheet folded once, so an A5.
  • C6 (114 x 162mm) takes an A4 sheet folded twice, so an A6.
  • DL (110 x 220mm) takes an A4 sheet folded in thirds.

Why does the size matter for a brochure holder?

Printed collateral only works if someone picks it up. A brochure holder gets it off the table and facing the aisle, instead of sitting in a flat pile that half your visitors walk straight past.

Most holders are built around one pocket size. A brochure that's too small for its pocket slips down and hides its own cover, and one that's too big won't go in at all. So decide the finished, folded size of each piece first, then choose the holder.

Our Folding Brochure Rack - A4 is double-sided, with panels for six different A4 brochures, so one rack can show your whole literature range from both directions.

Use the following steps to choose a brochure size and holder

1. List everything you want on display, and the finished size of each piece. Measure a printed sample with a ruler rather than going by the file name. A tri-fold DL brochure, for example, is 99 x 210mm folded but an A4 sheet when it's printed.

2. Match the pocket size to your pieces. If everything is A4, a rack with A4 panels is the right choice.

Note: If your range is mostly DL or A5, or a mix of sizes, talk to us. If the standard styles don't suit your space or your print, ask about a customised one.

3. Count your titles. Our A4 folding rack has panels for six different A4 brochures across its two sides, so plan which titles face the main aisle and which face the back of the stand.

4. Set up the rack. Take it out of the padded aluminium carry case supplied with it and unfold it. The frame is aluminium and the panels acrylic, and set-up and pack-down each take under 30 seconds.

5. Load each panel with a short stack, front cover facing out, so the title is easy to read from the aisle. Top up through the day.

6. Finally, if your stand is built around an Icon display, add a catalogue holder to the stand itself. Our Icon shelf & catalogue holder kit is a two-part add-on for the Icon: the shelf gives you a flat surface for a sample or demo unit, and the catalogue holder keeps brochures upright and to hand instead of stacked flat where nobody sees the cover. That's it, you're done!
