How to fix a retractable banner stand (pull-up or roll-up banner)

Most pull-up banner faults come down to three things: lost spring tension, a graphic that has wandered off square, or debris in the base. If it is a D2G Premier or Quickscreen, contact us before opening the base or working on the spring. For other brands, follow that model's instructions or ask its supplier. If the spring is broken or the base is bent, replace the hardware rather than forcing a repair. If only the print is damaged, fit a new graphic to the same stand.

Before you start: the spring is under tension
The base of a retractable banner stand holds a coiled spring that pulls the graphic back onto a roller. Stands are usually supplied pre-tensioned, so the spring is under load even when the banner is fully retracted.
- Contact us before opening a D2G Premier or Quickscreen base or working on its spring. These bases use a locking pin, but it is not supplied with the banner. Whether or not you have a pin, do not use the repair method for another model on these stands. For other brands, follow that model's own instructions or ask its supplier.
- For another stand whose manufacturer allows base servicing, work on a flat surface with two people. One controls the graphic while the other follows that model's instructions.
- Never cut the graphic off the roller. Once the spring lets go, it usually can't be reset on site.
- Keep fingers clear of the roller while it's under load.
- For a visible-slot check: use a torch. Only use other tools if the manufacturer's instructions for your particular stand call for them.
If the stand is under warranty, call the supplier before opening anything.
Pull-up banner not retracting: how to fix it
- Identify the stand. For a D2G Premier or Quickscreen, contact us before working on the base or spring.
- Look for blockages. Shine a torch along the slot where the graphic enters the base. Grit, a folded corner or a stray cable tie can stop the graphic rolling.
- Check the graphic is still attached. If it has come off the leader strip, the spring will turn but the graphic won't move.
- If the visible checks do not solve it, contact the supplier. Do not open a D2G base or change its spring tension without speaking to us.
If the roller turns freely with no spring resistance at all, the spring has probably failed.
Banner rolls crooked or catches on the side
A graphic that tracks to one side will crease along the edge and eventually jam. To fix it:
- Raise the banner fully and hook it to the pole.
- Check the graphic hangs square to the top rail. If it is skewed, re-seat it in the top rail clamp.
- Lift the top rail off the pole and hold it with both hands.
- Let the banner retract slowly and straight down, guiding it away from the end caps so it doesn't wander to either side.
If the stand leans, re-seat the pole and adjust the levelling feet, if fitted.
Lost tension: roll-up banner spring repair
Spring mechanisms differ between models and can release suddenly. For a D2G Premier or Quickscreen, contact us before opening the base or changing spring tension. For another brand, use its model-specific service instructions or ask its supplier. There is no safe number of turns that applies to every stand.
Don't over-tighten. Too much tension makes the banner snap back, creasing the graphic and wearing the mechanism.
Graphic has come off the top rail or out of the cassette
At the top rail: Follow the instructions for your particular stand or ask its supplier before attempting a repair.
At the base: Contact the supplier rather than opening the cassette or working on the spring yourself. If your stand is a D2G Premier or Quickscreen, contact us.
If the graphic has gone inside the base and the spring has unwound, don't force it. Send it to the supplier or replace the hardware.

Care and packing to prevent faults
- Guide it down every time. Never let the banner retract on its own. Hold the top rail and walk it down to the base.
- Follow the stand's packing instructions. Do not use a locking pin on a D2G stand without speaking to us.
- Pack it in its carry bag with the pole sections together.
- Store it dry, out of direct sun and away from heat.
- Clean with a soft, damp cloth. Use a mild soap solution for marks and avoid harsh chemicals on the print.
- Clean before anything else. If the roller is still stiff after cleaning, check the manufacturer's instructions before applying any lubricant, or ask the supplier.
- Check before each event: pole sections fit, end caps are secure, the graphic is square and the stand retracts smoothly.
Frequently asked questions
Why won't my retractable banner stand retract? A blocked slot or a spring problem may stop retraction. Check only what is visible from outside the base; contact the supplier before spring work.
Can I fix a jammed pull-up banner myself? You can check for debris visible at the slot without opening the base. If the jam is inside the base, contact the supplier. Do not open a D2G Premier or Quickscreen base without speaking to us.
Can I adjust the tension on my own? For a D2G Premier or Quickscreen, contact us first. For another brand, follow its model-specific instructions or ask its supplier.
Where can I get pull-up banner replacement parts, such as a pole? Poles, top rails and end caps are usually specific to the model, so ask the supplier of your stand. If it came from us, contact us with a photo of the base.
